Arthritis advice

Updated: May 15, 2020

Staying healthy and active are important parts of a good arthritis regimen. Activities such as yoga, tai-chi and pool exercises have been shown to help osteoarthritis pain. Therapies such as topical non-steroidal medications have been shown in multiple clinical trials to be safe and effective therapies for osteoarthritis. There are over the counter versions of these topical medications, and stronger prescription strength topical versions such as diclofenac. An added benefit of topical medication is that they are not systemically absorbed in a similar dose as their oral medication counterpart. Some of the topical medications such as diclofenac have been shown to be absorbed one hundredth to one thousandth absorbed as compared to the oral diclofenac. This means using the topical medication instead of the oral medication gives less harm to the stomach or kidneys. It is this type of optimizing that we strive for our patients here at OC Rheumatology & Arthritis.
